Dear Sir:

This letter is in response to a request made by your staff on June 10, 1982 during a telecon with our staff at North Anna Power Station and Corporate Of fice personnel concerning inspections related to Inspection and Enforcement Bulletin 79-13. Revision 2.

The initial inspection required by the bulletin was satisfactorily completed after hot functional testing was completed on the Unit. As was discussed during the telecon, the Steam Generator /Feedwater piping configuration on North Anna One and Two has not exhibited the water hammer problems that were described in earlier Westinghouse notices.

The recent inse rvice inspection conducted during the refueling outage on the feedwater piping between the Steam Generator and the first isolation valves yielded no recordable indications.

The specific areas which were inspected are as follows; A. One (1), 16" pipe to nozzle weld was volumetrically examined: there were no recordable indications by ultrasonic testing (line no. 16"WFTD-423-601-Q2, weld number 19).

DWG NO. VGB-2-2201-[B loop], completed on April,14,1982.

B. One (1) welded attachment was examined by a magnetic particle test with no recordable indications (line no. 16"-WFPD-424-601-Q2[ welded support]-1).

Reference:

DWG. NO. VGB-2-2101-[A loop], completed on April,14,1982.

C. Nine (9), class 2 pipe supports were visually inspected with no recordable indications (line no. 16" WFPD-424-601-Q2[A loop]. Completed on April.13,1982.

Identification numbers; H-33,H-34,H-35,H-202,H-203,H-204,H-205,H-231,H-232 D. One (1), feedwater nozzle to Steam Generator weld was volumetrically inspected by ultrasonic testing with no recordable indications.

Weld No. 2-9, DWG. NO. VGB-2-11-00[B loop], completed on April.14,1982.

As was stated during the telecon, it is our intention to conduct the required inspections during the oc:ober 1982 Fall maintenance outage. The steam generator nozzle to pipe weld inspections will be conducted in accordance with the criteria set forth in IE3 79-13 utilizing radiographic examinations supplemented by ultrasonic exarina-tions as necessary.
