June 15, 1982 L-82-248 Mr. James P. O'Reilly Regional Administrator, Region II l

U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission 101 Marietta Street, Suite 3100 Atlanta, Georgia 30303

Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

Re:

St. Lucie Unit #2 Docket No. 50-389 Failure of Instrument Inverters On March 22, 1982, Florida Power & Light informed NRC Region II of a potential 10CFR 50.55 (e) condition existing at the site involving the frequent failure of instrument inverters.

As required, an interim report was submitted on April 26, 1982. This report is provided to infom you of progress to date in resolving this item.

The inverter vendor, Solid State Controls, was contacted and an evaluation was performed. The subject failures were determined to be the result of overheating with subsequent failure of inverter subcomponents.

Based on this evaluation the vendor has suggested replacement of various subcomponents (choke, inductor and reguliner).

We are currently evaluating the vendor's suggested corrective action.

We antici-pate finalization of corrective action and submittal of a final report by August 15, 1982.

Very truly yours,

]
