6 June 22,1982 Docket No. 50-213 LS05-82 075 Mr. W. G. Counsil, Vice President Nuclear Engineering and Operations Connecticut Yankee Atomic Power Company Post Office Box 270 Hartford, Connecticut 06101

Dear Mr. Counsil:

SUBJECT:

SEP TOPIC IX-6, FIRE PROTECTION llADDAM NECK As you know, the staff is reviewing the fire protection capabilities of all operating reactors for compliance with 10 CFR Part 50.48 and Part 50 Appendix R as multi-plant action item B-41.

By letter dated May 7,1981, you were advised that the SEP Topic IX-6, Fire Protection, evaluation criteria are encompasse'dby the B-41 generic reviews, such that a separate SEP review would not be performed.

We had intended to consider any plant modifications necessary as a result of the B-41 generic review during the integrated assessment for your facility in order to assure that backfitting decisions related to " alternate" or " dedicated" shutdown capability would be made on a consistent basis.with other modifications which may be required for other SEP issues.

However, based on the number of exemptions requested (15) in your letter to D. Eisenhut, dated March 1,1982, it appears that the B-41 generic review will not be completed before the integrated assessment for your facility. Those aspects of the implementation of B-41 that are known prior to the completion of the integrated assessment will be considered to the extent practicable. Nevertheless, the B-41 5g review will be conducted independent of SEP.

SEP Topic IX-6, Fire i

Protection, is therefore, considered conplete for the purpose of f

N conducting the integrated assessment.
