WAPD-40 Radioactive Materials Shipping Cask o.

Description End or top loading cylindrical, 10 inch lead shielded, 304L stainless steel clad cask for the shipment of irradiated test specimens. Cask has integral skid welded to the body. Cylindrical cavity is 1/4 inch thick 304L stainless steel tube with 2 inches bore by 135.25 inches length. There are stainless steel clad 10 inch thick lead shielded plugs bolted to each end. Each end plug weighs approximately 65 pounds. A modification to the end plugs requires that 1/2 inch thick plates be bolted to the previously designed end plugs, in order to provide a total end plug flange thickness of 1.0 inch for puncture resistance. Overall size of the cask is 24 inches in diameter x 168 inches skid length. Gross weight (including skid) of the heaviest of the two existing casks is 27,500 pounds. Using the four lifting trunnions as tiedowns to a truck is forbidden, hence, a special holddown cradle is used during truck shipments. This cradle weighs approximately 5,000 pounds. The heat removal capacity is approximately 2,000 BTU /hr. Inner containers are required for all shipments.

(continued)

WAPD-40 cask was originally fabricated in accordance with Westinghouse Assembly Drawing #936F577 and later modified to meet AEC 0529 and DOT Large Quantity Radioactive Materials Shipping Container Specifications. The modifications are in accordance with Battelle Memorial Institute Drawing 100-E. The more recent modification to the cask end plugs is included in the revised Drawing

  1. 936F577.

The "IN-40" inner container is a seamless stainless steel pipe 1.90 inches in diameter (.145" wall thickness) and 134.00 inches long. A threaded stainless steel plug with silicon rubber "0" rings forms the leak-tight top closure; the bottom closure is a welded stainless steel pipe. The shipper is responsible for ensuring that there are no adverse chemical reactions between the specimens and container.

The "LRS" inner container is an aluminum tube 5/8 inches in diameter (1/8 inch wall thickness) and 123.8 inches long. Threaded aluminum plugs with silicon rubber "0" rings provide leak-tight seals at both ends. The shipper is responsible for ensuring there are no adverse chemical reactions between the specimens and container.

The "LLR" inner container is an aluminum tube 7/8 inches in diameter (1/8 inch wall thickness) and 123.8 inches long. Threaded aluminum plugs with silicon rubber "0" rings provide leak-tight seals at both ends. The shipper is responsible for ensuring that there are no adverse chemical reactions between the specimens and container.

b.

Authorized Contents The authorized contents of the package consists of fissile and large quan-tities of radioactive isotope materials (including activated structural material, corrosion products and mixed fission products) which shall be contained in sealed inner containers. Inner contain~ers are required for all shipments, both fissile and non-fissile. Three inner containers have been specifically designed for use in the WAPD-40 cask:

the "IN-40", the i

"LLR" and the "LRS" inner containers.

The fissile content of the cask shall be limited to 350 equivalent grams of U-235 where the number of equivalent grams of U-235 is determined by the equation: 1 x grams U-235 + 1.4 x grams of U-233 + 1.6 x grams of plutonium, c.

Restrictions 1.

When cask contains fissile materials up to 350 equivalent grams of U-235, it is approved as a Fissile Class II container with a minimum Transport Index o.' 3.2.

Paga 3 e

c.

(continu;d) 2.

The decay heat limit of the cargo being shipped is 200 BTU / hour / foot, up to a total of 2000 BTU / hour.

3.

All shipments must be dry and unmoderated.

4.

The contents of the package must be contained in sealed inner containers.

g The inner containers are constructed in accordance with the following k

Westinghouse Electric Drawings:

9 Inner Container Drawings 5

p IN-40 979C282, Rev. I and 971D362, Rev. 1 LRS 979C194, Rev. 2 LLR 979C277, Rev. 3 5.

During shipment, the inner cavity of the cask must be filled with the largest number of inner containers that will fit in the. cavity, even if some of these inner containers are empty.

6.

Contents of the container must be limited so that the gamma dose rate on the cask surface does not exceed 4.4 mrem /hr for shipment of activated structural material.

For fuel shipments, the gamma dose rate on the cask surface must not exceed 14.3 mrem /hr, and the neutron does l

rate on the case surface must not exceed 10.4 mrem /hr.

For mixed ship-ments of activated structural material and fuel, the gamma dose rate limit on the cask surface is 4.4 mrem /hr, and the neutron dose rate limit on the cask surface is 10.4 mrem /hr.

7.

Use of the trunnions for cask tiedown is prohibited.

8.

If aluminum inner containers are used, the container should not 0

exceed 300 F during nQrmal conditions of transport.
