U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission y

Washington, DC 20555 Attention:

Mr. Steven A. Varga, Chief Operating Reactors Branch 1 Division of Licensing Gentlemen:

STATUS OF INSTALLATION AND TESTING OF PROMPT

.1LERTING AND NOTIFICATION SYSTEM SALEM GENERATING STATION UNIT NOS. 1 AND 2 DOCKET NOS. 50-272 AND 50-311

(

The siren system as described in our May 26, 1981 submittal of the Salem Generating Station emergency plan has been installed and component tested.

We are presently continuing to correct minor problems with individual sirens in both the States of New Jersey and Delaware and siren activation equip-ment for the sirens located in Delaware.

To date we have successfully conducted siren system silent and growl tests in New Jersey.

Initial testing of selected sirens in Delaware indicate that the system is operational.

Complete silent and growl test of all sirens in Delaware should be com-pleted by February 12, 1982.

Both states have been provided with Implementing Procedures, state and county individuals responsible for activating the siren system have been briefed on its operation and the system is presently capable of being used should the need arise.

It is our understanding that this satisfies the requirement of 10CFR50, Appendix E, IV, D.3 and that we have therefore

" demonstrated that administrative and physical means have been established for alerting and providing prompt instructions to the public within the plume exposure pathway EPZ".

Additionally, it is our understanding that the four-month period in 10CFR 50.54 (5) (2) for correction of deficiencies identified during and after initial installation and testing will apply to any system deficiencies identified during future tests.

Status of Installation and January 29, 1982 Testing of Prompt Alerting and Notification System

\\, presents an update of our past and projected milestones.

The siren system acoustical testing shown as Item 2 was completed slightly ahead of schedule but the report of the final results has not yet been received.

This report will specifically define and document those areas covered by the sirens.

Although we are confident that the system as designed will meet NRC requirements, a complete system wide test with public participation will be performed during February.

This test is intended to improve public awareness of the system and to obtain input from the public on their percep-tion of the system's effectiveness.

If you have any questions concerning this program, please feel free to. contact me.

Sincerely, r

g J. M.
