APR 2 1982 Docket tios: 50-413 and 50-414 APPLICAtiT:
Duke Power Conpany FACILITY:
Catawba Nuclear Station, Units I and 2
SUBJECT:
SUMMARY
OF fiEETING ON MASOflRY WALLS CRITERIA On February 5,1982, the NRC staff met in Bethesda with representatives from Duke Power Corpany to discuss Duke's design regarding safety-related masonry walls at Catawba Station, Units 1 and 2.
A list of attendees is attached (Enclosure 1).
Duke's representatives iritiated the discussion by stating that Catawba design started in 1975 and was completed in 1977. Construction is presently complete for about 907. of the approxinately 4400 linear feet of Category I nasonry block walls as shown in the drawings transmitted to NRC on Janaury 20, 1982. All of the safety-related walls are located in the auxiliary building and their primary purpose is for fire protection, shielding or partition. No significant attach-ments are made to the block itself; however, light attachments (generally less than 200 lbs) are occasionally made to the vertical steel members.
'n the design of these walls, each course has a layer of durowall reinforcing and the blocks are framed in wide flange steel nenbers as shown in the above-referenced drawings.
Anong the walls yet to be constructed, half (i.e., 200 ft) represents extension of walls whose construction has already started and the other half represents new construction.
Duke's representatives also stated that the working stress method and the ceiling response spectrun were used for the wall design. The materials met Duke's speci-fications and QA/QC requirenents. Duke's staff recently perforned a finite element analysis for a wall panel using six different nodels. The stresses were low compared to allowables as per ACI 531-79. Duke assumed uncracked section in the calculations.
The NRC staff suggested the following for those walls not yet started:
1.
Add a horizontal rebar for each bedjoint.
2.
For spans greater that 5 feet, add one #4 rebar between the wide flange columns and grout.

n i In addition, the NRC staff suggested the following criteria for Duke's finite 4
element analysis:
1.
Use cracked section noment-of-inertia.
2.
Use QA/QC procedures in accordance with Appendix B to 10 CFR Part 50, 3.
75 damping for cracked section is acceptable.
4 Use three corponent earthquake in accordance with R.G.1.92.
5.
Provide the basis for in-plane shear strength.
i 6.
Consider eccentric loads.
7.
Provide the column analysis.
8.
Assess wall behavior under safe shutdown earthquake assuming certain cracks exist.
9.
Provide stress results obtained from the finite element analysis and corpare to criteria.
Duke agreed to add rebars for new wall constructiose, and to perform the finite elenent analysis in accordance with the flRC criteria. Duke will subrait the stress results by April 2,1982.
