GENERAL INFORMATION The enclosed information concerns a metal container within a metal container which is used to transport the Gulf Nuclear, Inc. Model 71-2A Americium-241/ Beryllium neutron source.
1.1 INTRODUCTION
The container, Model GNM-20, will be used to transport a 5 to 20 curie Americium-241/ Beryllium neutron source, Gulf Nuclear, Inc. Model 71-2A.
The GNM-20 with a 20 curie Americium-241/ Beryllium neutron source, Gulf Nuclear, Inc.
(GNI) source Model 71-2A, in place, has a transport index of approximately 3.
The container is cylindrical in shape and is transported in a vertical position.
The container has been painted safety purple for shipment an.d is sometimes used as a storage container within a controlled area.
2 PACKAGE DESCRIPTION 2.1 Packaging The GNM-20 is constructed of cold rolled, ten gauge steel
("T and has outer dimensions of twenty inches in diameter and twenty-four inches in length.
The inner container is a twelve inch diameter right cylinder.
The Americium-241/
Beryllium source is placed in the inner container and is retained with a screw cap.
The outer container lid is retained with a bar.
The outer container lid is four inches thick.
Both inner and outer containers are filled with a 60-40 weight percent of hydrated boric acid and polyester resin.
Detailed information concerning fabrication is presented in Appendix 1.
2.2 Contents of Package l
The GNM-20 may contain a source which may contain up to 20 curies of Americium-241.
The container will be used to transport Gulf Nuclear, Inc. cources, source model number 71-2A.
3 STRUCTURAL EVALUATION i
l 3.1 Discussion The GNM-20 container's basic integrity is due to the fact that the structure is a metal cylinder within a metal cylinder, both completely filled with a solid material.
The solid ma-terial is hydrated boric acid dispersed in polyester resin.

(2) 3.2 Design Criteria Since the radiation level of a 20 curie Americium-241/
Beryllium neutron source is low com'ared to the normal p
type B quantities, i.e. approximately 180 mrem /hr at l
thirty-six inches for the AmBe and approximately 7.2 R/hr j
for 20 curies of Cesium-137, The criteria for the neutron l
shield-is twofold; (1) a combination of hydrogenous material and distance from the source necessary to meet shipping requirements and (2) physical structure of the container i
must be capable of passing the hypothetical accident tests.
I 3.3 Weight i
The weight of the package is 350 pounds.
l 3.4 Mechanical Properties of the Materials All metal components of the container are fabricated from mild steel.
The shielding is a 60-40 weight percent hydrated boric acid and polyester resin.
3.5 Chemical and Calvanic Reactions The radioactive sources that will be transported in these containers are fabricated from stainless steel, 17-4 PH.
O The source model number is GNI 71-2A (See Appendix 8).
There will not be a reaction between the source and the mild steel housing.
Long term experience, approximately five years, indicates that there is no corrosion problem between boric acid and the mild steel structure.
3.6 Positive Closure The radioactive source is housed in the inner container which has a threaded cap.
The lid on the outer container retains the inner container.
The outer container lid is locked in place with a bar (See Appendix 1).
3.7 Lifting Devices i
There are two handles, one on each side of the container.
These handles are tested several times during production, painting and preparation for shipment.
3.8 Tiedown Devices There are no tiedown devices that compromise or add to the integrity of the container.

4 HYPOTHETICAL ACCIDENT CONDITIO.NS 4.1 Free Drop The GNM-20 was dropped thirty feet onto a inch steel plate placed on an eight inch thick concrete pad.
The

container sustained some physical damage but shielding 1
and containment characteristics were not compromised (See Appendix 2 and 5).
l 4.2 Puncture The container was dropped forty inches, striking a six inch diameter bar, eight inches long.
The GNM-20 sustained minor damage (See Appendix 3).
I 4.3 Thermal
)
The CNM-20 was suspended over a six foot diameter tank t
containing diesel fuel.
The fuel was ignited and the fire maintained for thirty minutes.
Temperature was monitored to insure that a temperature of 1475 degrees Fahrenheit was reached.
i Results: The container underwent some deformation and flam-()
mable gases were emitted from?the container.
These gases were decomposition components of polyester resin.
When the fire was extinguished, the gases ceased to burn.
Contain-ment was not compromised (See Appendix 4).
