Dear Mr. Denton:
This is to provide information requested by the NRC staf f regarding the control room HVAC radiation monitors at Zion.
Reference (a) trar.smitted the NRC's SER on Reset o f Engineered Safety Features.
That SER contained the following i
recommendation:
"The radiation monitoring instrumentation for control room isolation should be upgraded so as to be of suf ficient safety quality to survive the worst case seismic and environmental conditions that could be expected at the location of the installed equipment."
Reference (b) provided a description of the new control room HVAC radiation monitor being installed at Zion.
This monitor i
l has been designated non-safety related, which means that it is not covered under a 10 CFR 50, Appendix B, Quality Assurance Program, and that no explicit seismic or environmental qualification tests have been performed.
However, we feel that the system represents the best available technology under the current state of the art and will exhibit a high degree o f reliability.
The monitor has been seismically mounted, and the associated piping and piping hangers have been seismically designed and installed.
In addition, it should be noted that the monitor is located in a mild environment and is powered from an essential (safety-grade) power source.

H. R. Denton April 6, 1982 Reference (c) ' transmitted Commonwealth Edison's Control Room Habitability studies as required by NUREG 0737 Item II.D.3.4.
As stated in the Zion study, a modification will be made to effect isolation of the control room HVAC upon receipt o f a safety injec-tion signal.
In the event o f a design basis LOCA or other accident that could result in significant releases of radioactivity from the reactor coolant system, a safety injection signal will be generated.
The safety injection signal is a result of several diverse input signals and is provided by safety-grade equipment.
This feature will provide additional assurance that the control room HVAC will be isolated in the event of significant radioactive releases.
Please address questions regarding this matter to this office.
Very truly yours, Yk F.
