Mr. W.C. Seidle, Chief Reactor Projects Branch 2 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region IV 611 Ryan Flaza Drive, Suite 1000 Arlington, Texas 76011 KMLNRC 82-206 Re:

Docket No. STN 50-482 Ref: Letter KMLNRC 81-059 dated 2/18/81 from GLKoester, KG&E, to WCSeidle, NRC Subj: Final 10CFR50.55(e) Report - General Electric HFA Relays, NRC Information Notice 81-01

Dear Mr. Seidle :

This letter is a final report on potentially defective General Electric HFA Relays identif.ied in NRC Information Notice 81-01 and GE Service Advice 721-PSM-152.2.

Kansas Gas and Electric Company (KG&E) initially reported this potential 10CFR50.55(e) to NRC Region IV on December 23, 1980.

KG&E conducted a thorough investigation of equipment and suppliers to determine if any of the potentially defective coils were installed in safety-related relays at Wolf Creek Generating Station. A total of 48 relays with the suspect black or clear Lexan coil spools were identified in safety-related equipment. These were documented on Deficiency Reports ISD6008E and ISD6019E. General Electric conducted an inspection of these relays and found that none of the 48 relays were included in their Service Advice as potentially defective and no replacements were required.

The investigaticn and evaluation of this matter revealed that none of the safety-related equipment at Wolf Creek Generating Station contain any of the potentially defective HFA relays. Therefore, no significant defects or deficiencies exist which would adversely affect the safety of the plant. We have, therefore, concluded that this matter is not reportable under 10CFR50.55 (e).

Documentation of the evaluation of this matter is available for your review.

If you require additional information on this matter, please contact me or Mr. Otto Maynard of my staff.
