meeting was held with the NRC Staff in Bethesda, MD on May 13, 1982 to discuss the proposed license condition on surveillance of hafnium control rods as described in reference 1.

By reference 2, Union Electric had previously requested that the proposed license condition not be implemented.

The NRC provided a meeting summary by reference 3.

The following paragraph describes the surveillance program that was discussed in the meeting.

l Union Electric agree.s to perform a visual inspection of select control rods during one of the first five refueling l

outages at Callaway.

A second visual inspection will be l

performed between the 10th and 15th refueling outages, inclusive.

l These inspections are intended to detect evidence of control rod degradation such as deformation or cladding defects.

In

addition, Union Electric will review the results of the control l

rod visual surveillance program performed at the Comanche Peak plant.

Rod drop time and rod worth tests will be performed as i

required by the Technical Specifications.

It is our understanding that the above commitment will eliminate the need for the license condition described in reference 1, section 4.2.3.2 (10).
