SPENT FUEL ROOL MODIFICATIONS - REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION - YANKEE NUCLEAR POWER STATION The staff is continuing its review of your letter of September 17, 1981 concerning an increase in capacity of the spent fuel pool at the Yankee Nuclear Power Station. We have determined that the information requested in the enclosure to this letter is necessary for us to complete our review. These items were previously discussed with you in telephone conversations and we request that you formally docket your responses within 30 days of your receipt of this letter.
The reporting and/or recordkeeping requirements contained in this letter affect fewer than ten respondents; therefore, OMB clearance is not required under P.L.96-511.

REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION SPENT FUEL POOL MODIFICATIONS YANKEE NUCLEAR POWER STATION 1.
Provide an estimate of the total person-rem to be received by personnel performing the SFP modification.
You should include a description of the work to be performed, the dose rate individuals will be exposed to, the time spent in the radiation field and the estimate person-rems ' required for each step of the operation.

Provide the dose rate for the SFP area when 150 day decayed fuel elements are shielded with 5 ft. of water.
Specify how this dose rate was detennined.

You have indicated in your Radiological Impacts Section that current radiation exposure rates along the edge of the pool do not justify clean-up of the sides of the pool.
You should specify the exposure rates that would require vacuum clean-up of the SFP walls.

Describe the samples and instrument readings and the frequency of.
measurement that will be performed to monitor the water purity and the need.for spent fuel pit cleanup system demin6ralizer resin.and filter replacement. State the chemical and radiochemical limits to be used for monitoring the spent fuel pool water and initiating corrective action.
Provide the basis for establishing these limits.
Your response should consider variables such as: boron., gross gamma and iodine activity, demineralizer and/or filter differential pressure, demineralizer decontamination factor, pH, and crud level.
