" PROBABILITY OF EXCEEDING TIIE OPERATING BASIS EARTifQUAKE 110RIZONTAL DESIGN RESPONSE SPECTRA, MIDLAND PLANT - UNITS 1 AND 2",
PREPAP".D FOR CONSUMERS POWER COMPANY BY WESTON GEOPIIYSICAL CORPORATION, MAY 1982 In response to a verbal request from the Geosciences Branch of the NRC Staff, Consumers Power Company has contracted Weston Geophysical Corporation (WGC) to evaluate the probability of a seismic event exceeding the Operating Basis Earthquake (OLE) horizontal design response spectra. The results of the WGC evaluation are contained in the enclosed report entitled, "Frobability cf Exceeding the Operating Basis Earthquake IIorizontal Design Response Spectra, Midland Plant - Units 1 and 2", May 1982.
The WGC Report concludes that the best estimate probability of exceeding the OBE during an assumed 40-year economic li fe-span of the Midland Plant is 0.084 for the 50% elevated region between the eriods of 0.2 and 0.6 seconds, and 0.201 for the remaining unaltered parts tf the OBE spectrum.
