TELECON WITH NEW MEXIC0 ENVIRONMENTAL IMPROVEMf.NT DIVISION (NMEID)
On April 19, 1982, Harry Pettengill and I had a telecon with Mr. Jerry Stewert of HMEID to discuss certain criteria NMEID was using for cleanup of two small scale uranium recovery facilities. This action was in response to NMEID's communication to you of these criteria. Mr. Stewert clarified that the criteria of 25pR/hr for gamma exposure rate one meter above the ground and 10pCi/ gram for Ra-226 concentration in soil both included background. Harry Pettengill stated that these two criteria are reasonably close to criteria that the staff has used in comparable clean-up actions. NRC actions to date have followed those levels specified in 40 CFR 192. However, the NMEID criteria of 3pC1/1 Ra-222 or 0.033 WL are not equivalent. We offered no opinion other than to state the difference.
