RESULTS OF EDDY CURRENT MEASUREMENTS IN RINGHALS 3 MAY, 1981 (Ref Westinghouse Report, December,-81)

Background:

Water Hammer Event in FW lines. Scope: 14 tubes in Row 49 inspected by Zetec. Result: No dents on preheater tubes. However, "it was suggested that several tubes exhibited signals, which should be monitored in future inspection". This last conclusion was, however, nct reported to SKI. SKI POSITION 1. The fretting seen in Ringhals 3 is a new phenomenon, not earlier seen in this type of SG. It is of generic ' nature. 2. The fretting is very fast (leakage af ter < 3 000 EFPH operation). 3. The problem is a safet problem. 3.1 Small primary leaks increase risk for large accidents. 3.2 Risk for multiple tube /SG failure. 3.3 Break of barrier for release to athmosphere (fuel leakage) 4. The problem can most probably be solved. No acceptable solution has, however, yet been given to SKI for Ringhals 3k 5. Plugging according to RG 1.121 not sufficient. Basis is good for initial tube integrity, but analysis is in addition needed for 'l - additional wear l - effect of increased gap (rad gap 0.2 mm, tube thickness 1.1 mm) - lost supports (lower resonance frequency) - loose parts in secondary side (plugged tubes - no indication) l 6. Hydroelastic vibrations have not been shown to be the i only cause of harmful vibration. 7. (Full scale) model tests are very important. 9
