Docket No.70-398 Inspection 70-398/82-02 This is in response to your letter of April 5,1982, to me regarding Inspection No. 70-398/82-02 conducted during the period March 16-19, 1982, by Mr. J. Roth of your office.

With specific regard to the item of noncompliance outlined in the Notice of Violation contained in Appendix A of your letter, the corrective steps taken relating to the storage arrangement of special nuclear materials in Building 222 Room B118 of the NBS Gaithersburg site were as follows:

1.

The materials in question were immediately relocated in order to comply with the storage requirements in License SNM-362.

Full compliance with the license storage requirements was achieved on March 17, 1982.

2.

Health Physics conducted remedial training for the custodian of the facility to ensure continuing compliance with the storage requirements of SNM-362. This was accomplished by March 18, 1982.

3.

On a long-tenn basis our plan is to lower the allowed inventory so that the storage constraints can be eliminated. We anticipate accomplishing this by the end of CY 1982.

The additional constructive connents contained in the details of the inspection report for which responses were not requested have been considered and either have been or will be inccrporated in our overall radiation safety program as applicable.

Sincerely, D
