This PN updates PNO-II-82-36, dated April 12, 1982.

Carolina Power & Light is continuing to investigate indications of two jbleN g

irregularities near or on the outside surface of the pressure vessel.

9 9 un Ultrasonic testing data is being analyzed by Westinghouse Corporation, the nuclear l

steam system supplier, which also performed the pressure vessel inspection.

In order to obtain other relevant data, the licensee is dealing with Combustion Engineering Inc., manufacturer of the vessel, and Southwest Research Institute, which perfonned the pre-operational base line inspection.

Region II, with NRR assistance, is arranging for consultants to assist in the NRC review of the data.

CP&L will make a presentation to the NRC staff in Washington once all data has been compiled. This presentation is expected to take place in the next two weeks or so. A metallurgist from the Region Il staff is continuing to monitor the licensee's actions at the site. The unit has been shut down since February 27 and is scheduled to return to service in early June.

No media interest has developed.

Neither the licensee nor the NRC plans a press release.

The State of South Carolina has been informed.

This information is current as of 11:30 a.m. on April 13.
