Dear Mr. DelGeorge:

As part of the Division of Human Factors (DHFS) Safety Technology program, a review of the use of ISEGs is being conducted under contract by the Battelle-Pacific Northwest Laboratories (PNL). The purpose is to determine current industry practices to assist in developing our long-term regulatory policy in this area.

Site visits at selected utilities and plants are being conducted to obtain relevant information. The topic areas covered include the functions of

_ safety review groups including the ISEG, Utility Review Group, and Plant Review Group.

The NRC Project Manager will contact you in the near future to arrange a site visit at a mutually convenient time between now and July 1982. The site visits may take up to three days and may involve meetings at the corporate level with people such as the vice president for nuclear operations and members of the utility review group; and at the plant level with the plant manager, members of the plant review group, and the ISEG.

It is also expected that members of the Region III Office and tl.e Resident Inspector will participate in the discussions.

This letter confirms that the contracts made regarding these site visits are endorsed by the NRC.

Further, it reinforces that arrangements for the site visit are voluntary on the part of the utility and the individuals. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

If you have any questions, please contact Mr. John A. Zwolinski, (301) 492-8460.

Sincerely, Originalsigned by S:ma A.Varga Steven A. Varga, Chief 82051704%O p Operating Reactors Branch #1 cc: See next page D. Hayes, Reg III 1
