{{#Wiki_filter:t.,. ph8fCo jo,, UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION n h WASHINGTON. D. C. 20555 ~ i \\*****/ CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRATION AND SAFETY ANALYSIS SUMyARY 81-04a SEALED SOURCE 81-04b Manufacturer and Distributor Sealed Source Model Designation EAD Metallurgical, Inc. AMX-llN1 71 Pearce Avenue AMX-llN2 Tonawanda, NY 14150 Isotope Maximum Activity Americium-241 2.5 microcuries in 2-10 millimeter disc (up to 250 microcurie per square centimeter of foil) 9 Conditions of Normal Use The Model AMX-llN1 and AMX-llN2 sources are designed for use in residential .cs and industrial type smoke detection devices which will be operated at ambient 7 conditions. These ' sources are a modified version of the Model AMX-1100 which is currently approved for licensing. Ability of Sealed Source to Withstand Loss of Containment under Abnormal Conditions (Fire, Explosion, Etc.) ~ ~ Prototype sources were subjected by the manufacturer to a high temperature test of 1200 C. Test results show that the worst case release from any source did not exceed 0.1 percent of the original source content. Thus +.he tested sources would be expected to maintain containment integrity under high temperature conditions likely to be encountered in storagt, transportation or use. Scaled source Description The Model AMX-llN1 consists of a Model AMX-1100 foil metallurgically bonded to a nickel substrate. This combination of the AMX-1100 foil and nickel substrate provides an enhanced high temperature resistance. Figure 1 shows the AMX-llN1 design. The AMX-llN2 consists of two AMX-1100 foils bonded to a nickel substrate as shown on Figure 2. Prototype Testing Prototypes of the Model AMX-11N1 and AMX-llN2 have been subjected to an identical series of tests to that used for the Model AMX-1100 foils. These tests indicate tha't the Models AMX-llN1 and AMX-llN2 foils meet or exceed c( the requirements of U.S. and international standards for sources to be used ls residential or industrial smoke detectors. jg4g92 820218 COPPELLB2-76 PDR

m e 81-04a 81-04b \\ l External Radiation Levels Radiation 1.vels from the Model AMX-llN1 are identical to the Model AMX-1100 and are reported by EAD to be as follows: at 1 cm........ 0.75 mr/hr/ microcurie at 5 cm........ 0.13 mr/hr/microcur ie at 15 cms...... 0.12 mr/hr/ microcurie ~ Quality Assurance and Control Quality assurance and control is identical to that employed for the Model AMX-1100 which is currently registered as acceptable for licensing. Limitations and/or Other Conditions of Use A. These sources shall be distributed on'ly to specific licensees oh NRC or Agreement States. ~ B. Conditions for handling and use of the source ere to be determined by the licensing authority; sources should not be handled with the bare ~T.. hands. Safety Evaluation Summary Basea on our review of the information and te:t data contained in the correspondence cited below, we conclude that EAD Metallurgical Models AMX-llN1 and AMX-llN2 foils are acceptable for licensing purposes. Both models are essentially the same as the EAD Model AMX-1100 which is currently approved for licensing purposes. The new models differ only in that the foil source (AMX-1100) is bonded to a nickel substrate. Accordingly to the EAD test data the AMX-llN1 and AMX-llN2 sources have improved containment integrity at high temperatures (600 C - 1200 C range). These new d'esigns are expected to withstand the environmental and other factors to which they may be subjected during storage, transportation and use as residential or industrial smoke detectors. Since the new designs exhibit the same external dosage characteristics as the Model AMX-1100, the dose and dose commitment factors are not exrected to change. Safety Evaluation Summary Based on our review of the information and test data contained in the correspondence cited below, we conclude that EAD Metallurg; cal Model AMX-1100 foil and the AMX-2100 series foil mountings (see specific models listed) are acceptable for licensing purposes. Our conclusions are based ona prototype test data which shows the ability of the foil source and source plus mounting to withst:nd environmental and other factors to which they _ may be subjected when used in residential and industrial type smoke detectors.
