81-04a SEALED SOURCE 81-04b (Amended in En.irety)
Hanufacturer and Distributor Sealed Source Model Desicnation EAD Metallurgical, Inc.
Model AMX-1100 foil unmounted and 71 Pearce Avenue Model AMX-1100 foil mounted in the Tonawanda, NY 14150 following holders: AMX-2101, AMX-2102, AM X-2103, AMX-2104, AMX-2105, AMX-2106-1, AMX-2107-1, AMX-2112-1, AMX-2122-2 AMX-2132-1, AMX-2142-2, AMX-2152-2, a nd AMX-2162-1 Isotope Maximum Activity Americium-241 2.5 microcuries in 2-10 millimeter diameter disc (up to 250 microcuries per square centimeter of foil)
- "i C
Conditions of Normal Use Both mounted and unmounted foils are designed for use in either residential or industrial smoke detectors for use at ambient temperatures and pressure.
Ability of Sealed Source to_ Withstand Loss of Containment under Abnonnal Conditions (Fire, Explosion, 'Ei._c)
Prototype sources were subjected by the manufacturer to high temperature tests of 1200 C.
Test results show that the worst case release from any source did not exceed 01 percent of the original source content.
Thus the tested sources would be expected to maintain containment integrity under'high temperature conditions likely to occur in storage, transportation or use.
Sealed Source and Source Holder Description The Model AMX-1100 sealed source consists of americium oxide uniformly distributed and sintered in a pure gold matrix which is further contained between a backing of gold coated pure silver and a front covering of' gold electroplated with rhodium and fabricated by hot forging methods.
The continuously welded metal layers are rolled so that the minimum thickness

Sub-division of the rolled foil is accomplished by cutting or punching into discs of 2-10 mm diameter or rectangular strips of say 3-10 mm per side.
At the activity loading specified above, there is no loose contamination above the wipe test limit of 0.005 microcuries (see Figure 1).
Mounted foil sources of the AMX-2100 series consists of AMX-1100 foil discs (2.36 to 6 mm diameter) and various brass or stainless steel holders.
Brass holders are either tin or nickel plated. The two basic types of holders employed are brass or stainless steel cup-like holders and brass or stainless steel plate-like holders.
In the cup-like holders, the foil disc (usually 5 mm diameter) is seated in a 0.030" deep cup and the surrounding walls are machine crimped over the disc's edge.
In a second cup-like holder a thin portion (0.015")
of the wall above the foil seat is pushed slightly down and inward with a forming tool narrowing the opening and positively locking the foil discs.
In a separate operation, the outer walls are flanged outward to provide positive locking of the holder to the plate.
g.
In plate-like holders, sources are placed' into a shallow 0.005" recess created in one plate. A second plate is positioned over the source.
This-cover plate has ears protruding through the first plate which are folded over, thereby pressing and locking the source in its seat.
In a second plate like holder two plates have two holes through which rivets are placed and are

impact riveted together.

Prototype Testing Prototype Model AMX-1100 blanked sealed sources have been tested to conditions described by ANSI Standard N5.10-1968 and classification of C52222-has been demonstrated, Results of wipe tests of the tested foils were acceptable to
<0.005 microcuries.
s Model AMX-1100 foils have experienced the following additional tests:,
l.

Saliva was applied for one hour, foils were washed and wiped:
<0.0005 microcurie / microcurie was removed in the wash water and wipe.
4.
Foils were subjected to tests in sulful dioxide'and hydrogen sulfide,
<0.005 microcurie wipable contamination was found.
AMX 2100 Series mounted foils have experienced the following additional tests:
l.
Vibration tested at 1700 vibrations per minute in three axis with 0.75" amplitude for a ' period of three hours. No mounted source suffertd any mechanical deformation and/or foil source was ejected from its holders.
Foil: were wiped and removable activity did not exceed 0.1 nanocuries.
2.
Sources were individually positioned on a steel block 3" x 5" x and a weight of 20 lbs. was flat impact surface of 3" x 3" was l,l"ilowed to drop onto each source from five feet. The mounted sources were subjected to impact both on their side as well as their front.
No foil discs were ejected from its seat in the mounting and wipe tests in all cases did not exceed 1.2 nanocuries.
,1.m External Radiation __ Levels EAD reports the following dose rates from unshielded foils:
a t 1 cm........... 0.75 mr/hr per microcurie at 5 cm........... 0.13 mr/hr per microcurie at 15 cms......... 0.012 mr/hr per n.icrocurie Quality Assurance and Control All of the Model AMX-1100 sources are checked by gamma counting to ensure that the activity in each foil is within specified limits.
Each source is wipe tested to an acceptance limit of 0.005 microcuries.
In addition to the above, each Model AMX-1100 foil is checked by alpha' spectrometry to determine the adequacy of the gold cover.
i Manufactured lots of mounted foil sources are subjected to visual inspection (AQL 0.65), radioactivity content (AQL 0.65), ion current (AQL 1.5),
and removable activity test, i.e., wipe test (AQL'l.5). Wipe test filter paper specimens test limit for removable activity is 0.1 nanocurie.
