SUBJECT:

SUl111ARY OF VISIT TO ficGUIRE SITE ON ltARCH 5,1982 A visit was made to the McGuire Nuclear Station (17 niles north of Charlotte, N.C.)

on March 5, 1982 The purpose of the site visit was to observe and discuss the licensee's Eddy Current testing of the McGuire Model D steam generator. A list of attendees is shown as Enclosure 1.

The McGuire steam generator Edely Current Testing Progran was discussed with the licensee. Enclosure 2 presents a summary of the previous program undertaken. No stean gen 1.rator tube wear indications were observed. However, the previous program only involved testing of "A" steam generator. The current outage program will examine all four steam generators.

Pursuant to the staff's February 22, 1982, ietter to Duke Power Company, the licensee intends to subnit a detailed report describing the results of the current steam generator examination and a proposed restart progran by flarch 12, 1982, in advance of planned restart of Unit 1.

At the conclusion of the site visit, the staff visited the recently completed Electric Power Research Institute Non-destructive Evaluation Center. The HDE Center is located on a nine acre site in the University Research Park near Charlotte,.N.C. The Center was corpleted in February 1981, and has been designed and-staffed to translate the results of NDE research into field-qualified in-service inspection systems.
