the Sacramento Municipal Utility District is hereby submitting Special Report Number 82-03.
On March 12, 1982 a drum containing contaminated equipment, which was being shipped from Rancho Seco Nuclear Generating Station to Babcock and Wilcox, was discovered by the carrier to have a hole through the barrel wall.
Chem-Rad personnel at Rancho Seco were notified, as well as the California Public Health Department, the Nuclear Regulatory Conmission, and Babcock and Wilcox. Since the hole was about the size of a nail hole, immediate action consisted of merely covering the hole with tape until a survey could be made to detennine if any contamination had been released.
A survey by the NRC verified that no contamination had resulted. The barrel was retur 2d to Rancho Seco for corrective action.
Subsequent investigation revealed that the plastic inner liner had not been penetrated. The contaminated material was re-barreled and shipped March 16, 1982. The original barrel was a standard 17H drum, as was the replacement barrel.
