DUQUESNE LIGHT COMPANY Beaver Valley Power Station NARRATIVE

SUMMARY

OF MONTHLY OPERATING EXPERIENCE - SEPTEMBER 1980 September 1 Station in Operating Mode 5 with the reactor coolant system through at atmosphere pressure and a system temperature of approximately September 21 90F.

The coolant level was being maintained at approximately mid elevation of the Cold Leg loop piping.

September 22-Station in Operational Mode 5.

Filled the reactor coolant through system and pressurized the coolant system with nitrogen.

September 23 System pressure of 325 PSIG was reached on September 23.

September 24 Station ht 0perational Mode 5 with an approximate system pressure of 320 PSIG and an approximate system temperature of 100F.

Reactor Coolant System Fill and Vent was performed and System Heat-up was begun.

System pressure was reduced to approximately l

100 PSIG to draw a steam bubble and at 1545 hours0.0179 days
0.429 hours
0.00255 weeks
5.878725e-4 months
a steam bubble was established in the pressurizer.

The Residual Heat Removal System was also in service.

September 25 Station in Operational Mode 5 with an approximate system through pressure of 300 PSIG and approximate system temperature of September 30 120F.

The steam bubble was maintained in the Pressurizer with Residual Heat Removal System in service.

MAJOR SAFETY - RELATED MAINTENANCE - SEPTEMBER 1980 J

Beaver Valley Power Station is presently shut down for major system modifications required by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

The major modifications are performed as construction activitio. au;.J.ur jobs are performed as station maintenance activities.

The following items were performed or in progress during September, 1980.

1.

Final pre-heat-up inspections of the re-installed Bergen-Patterson large-bore snubbers were completed.

These snubbers will be inspected agaln at Mode 3.

2.

Installation and initial construction-testing of the fourth, and last, chemical addition spray pump were completed.

These pumps add sodium hydroxide solution to the quench spray during emergency containment depressurization.

)

3.

Inspection and modification of pipe hangers, supports and base plates located inside the containment were completed.

Final engineering review was in progress. Modifications of hangers, supports and base plates located outside i

the containment were in progress.

i 4.

Operational testing of the reactor coolant pumps was performed after modifi-cation of the motor thrust runners.

5.

Calibrations and fuctional checks of station instrumentation required prior to Mode 4 operation were begun by the station instrument maintenance section.
