SUBJECT:

SUMMARY

OF VISIT TO HESTINGliOUSE S/G !!0 DEL TESTING FACILITIES A visit was nade to the licensee's steam generator supplier, Westinghouse Electric Corp, Pittsburgh, PA, on March 12, 1982. The purpose of the visit was to observe and discuss steam generator pre-heater section model testing now underway at the Westinghouse facilities. A listing of attendees is shown in the Enclosure.

Various scale rnodel testing of the Model D (pre-heater type) steam generator has been underway at several Westinghouse facilities since December 1981. The current model testing observed by the staff can be sunmarized as follous:

a) Forrest Hills facility:. full scale nockup of the entire pre-heater; to be used to determine feasibility of pre-heater modification including installation procedures.

b) Research Center: small, bench type 1/7 scale t.mdel for air test applications; 1/6 scale water test r.edel-utilizes laser doppler neasurement technique of turbulent flow in front of S/G tube bundle; 0.417 scale model-flow induced vibration water test.

c) Waltz Mill facility: 2/3 scale model water test.

Westinghouse indicated that the results of model testing thus far appear to corro-brate with each other as well as with Ringhals and Almaraz information. They must still establish a reference technique to determine if the final fix will be accept-able.

The overall objective of the test progran is (1) to validate the final engineering fix and (2) provide a technical basis to support interin reactor operation at some reduced power level.
