SEF 7 378 MEMORANDUM FOR: Sheldon Meyers, Director Office of Fuel Cycle and Material Safety, NMSS FROM:
Robert G. Ryan, Director Office of State Programs
SUBJECT:
SEMINAR ON IN-SITU URANIUM MINING We find there is considerable interest from both the Agreement States and non-Agreement States in a seminar on in-situ leaching.
The Texas Radiation Control Program would like to co-sponsor a seminar on in-situ uranium mining with the NRC. They propose a three and one-half day session that would include a visit to a commercial size in-situ uranium mine. The remainder of the time would be spent in examining the regulatory responsibilities of the various agencies involved in this process; environmental monitoring; occupational hazards; waste disposal; and environmental restoration.
We are interested in co-sponsoring such a seminar with Texas to be held in Corpus Christi, probably early in 1979. Our role would be to coor-dinate the seminar and to support attendance of State personnel from those States where uranium is mined or milled. Staff frca your Division would of course be needed to discuss the Commission's regula-tory responsibilities in this mining-milling process and the technical licensing considerations.
I would appreciate having your staff contact John Vaden to discuss the development of this seminar. We note in Mr. Martin's memo of June 27, 1978 to Mr. Kerr his interest in partici-pating in such workshops. We believe this subject is one of prime interest to the States at this time.
