Dear Mr. Vassallo:
In our letter of December 22, 1981 to Mr. T. A. Ippolito, Carolina Power & Light Company (CP&L) requested formal concurrence from the NRC Staf f concerning the absence of fire barriers for Conventional Service Water Pump 1A s.d Nuclear Service Water Pumps 1B and 2A.
This subject had been dh. cussed, and it is CP&L's recollection that the NRC Staff verbally concurred that these barriers were not necessary during a March 9, 1979 meeting.
In your letter of February 1,1982, you stated that the require-I ment for fire barriers is presently set forth by Section III.G of Appen-dix R to 1PCFR Part 50 and that the Commission decided that Section III.G should be a mandatory backfit requirement. You further stated that the require-ment for the fire barriers must be complied with unless we request and receive an exemption from the applicable requirements of Section III.G.
The purpose of this letter is to document CP&L's intent to request such an exemption for the Service Water Building.
We expect to provide the appropriate documentation and formally file an exemption request for this item as a part of our planned compliance and exemption request for Section III.G scheduled for June 30, 1982. Accordingly, we would expect l
that this issue would remain as Unresolved Items (50-324/81-23-05 and 50-325/81-23-05) on I.E. Reports 81-23, pending the Commission'.s final j
ruling on our exemption request.
