SAFETY EVALUATION REPORT FORT CALHOUN MECHANICAL OPERABILITY OF PURGE / VENT VALVES EQUIPMENT QUALIFICATION BRANCH DIVISION OF ENGINEERING The NRC utaff has reviewed t h e Oct obe r 2,1981 submittal from Omaha Public Power in response to the NRC letters of April 6, 1981 and July 28r 1981 concerning containment purg'e/ vent valve mechanical operability.
Fort Calhoun uses 42" diameter purge valves.
Omaha Public Power District has decided not to pursJe Qualification of the 42" purge valves and wiLL limit use of these valves to the refueling and n
cold shutdown modes.
The staff interprets the licensee's response satisfying the NRC's operabtLity.
concerning the 42" valves as requirement for long term use.
Based on thise the staff does not plan any further action in the area of operability demonstration
