RETENTION OF RCIC TESTING W. Long, PTRB g

4 In your letter of December 4,1981, you stated that certain RCIC tests at Grand Gulf, which you were committed to perform, need not be done because another test (Simulated Loss of All A/C Power) will be performed.

The RCIC tests to be deleted involved the following:

A.

Startup of the RCIC System after Loss of AC Power to the

system, B.

Operation of the RCIC system with a sustained loss of AC power to the system, and C.

RCIC operation to demonstrate DC separation.

These tests are within the scope of preoperational testing described in Regulatory Guide 1.68 ( Appendix A.l.d.).

The Special Simulated Loss of All A/C Test is not a satisfactory substitute for these tests because it will not be performed prior to operation. Therefore, the staff will require that the tests listed above be performed or that your presently planned initial test program be expanded, as necessary, to accomplish the objectives of these tests.
