September 28,.-1981-Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C. 20555 Attention:

Ms. E. G. Adensam, Chief Licensing Branch No. 4 Re: Catawba Nuclear Station Docket Nos. 50-413 and 50-414

Dear Mr. Denton:

Your letter of June 9, 1981 to W. S. Lee requested quarterly updates offthe projected construction completion date for Catawba Unit 1.

Our June'23.-1981 response confirmed our commitment to an August 1983 fuel load date but recog-nized that our work status at that time was three months behind schedule. We also outlined actions that were being taken to recover the lost time.

The fc11owing provides information for our first quarterly update.

In addition, information on crection rates of various commodities for the August accounting peciod are included as requested by W. H. Lovelace, NRC/MPA, during the NRC~

Ca". ioad Forecast Panel visit in At. gust 1981. Future updates will provide erection rates for the period between updates.

I Catawba Unit 1 is estimated to be 85% comple'te as of July 19, 1981. This unit is currently three months behind schedule. As we reported in our June 23, 198L letter, a detailed schedule evaluation was made in June to better prioritize work and lessen the manpower impact by rearranging non-critical system turn-Some improvement in the projected completion date resulted from this overs.

evaluation. However, since June, the slippage of mechanical systems. scheduled to be turned over to our Steam Production Department-for functional testing has adversely. affected the projected completion date. The net result is that we continue to project a fuel load date 3 months behind schedule (November 1983).

We plan to continue to monitor the schedule closely and make improvements where j

possible in an eftort to meet our scheduled fuel load date of August 1983.
