NRC Region I Combined Inspection Report No. 50-220/93-10 and
50-410/93-10
This refers to the results of the routine resident safety inspection conducted by Messrs.
W. Schmidt, R. Plasse, and W. Mattingly from May 9 through June 19, 1993, at Nine Mile
Point Units 1 and 2, Scriba, New York. Mr. Plasse discussed the inspection findings with
members of your staff at the exit meeting conducted on July 1,1993.
This inspection was directed toward areas important to public health and safety. The enclosed
NRC Region I Inspection Report describes the areas examined during the inspection. Within
these areas, the inspection consisted of observation of activities in progress, interviews with
personnel, and selective examinations of procedures and representative records.
Your staff operated and maintained both units in a safe manner during the period. We
considered the prompt identification, response, and repair of the Unit 2 electrohydraulic control
system leak noteworthy. Also notable was the scram discharge volume pilot air header leak
identification and repair. Both the operations and maintenance staffs demonstrated excellent
attention-to-detail and the proper safety perspective during these events.
