The Honorable John Dingell, Chairman Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations.

1 Committee on-Energy and Commerce t

U.S. House of Representatives i

Washington, DC 20515 j

Dear Mr. Chairman:

j On March 3,1993, the Commission appeared before the Subcommittee on Oversight -

.j and Investigations concerning fire protection at nuclear power plants.

At that hearing,' Chairman Selin committed to provide a quarterly status report on.

the Thermo-Lag. fire barrier action plan and the implementation of the fire protection program reassessment recommendations.

j describes the current status of the NRC staff's ac'tions to resolve technical. issues-associated with Thermo-Lag 330-1 fire barriers. The staff i

has revised the action plan to add new' tasks and to adjust for resource, priority, and schedule changes. The adjustments, however, have-not delayed the overall completion schedule or increased the resource estimates.

s The staff has developed a program to address the recommendations in the February 27,.1993, report on the reassessment of the NRC. fire protection i

program. The Fire Protection Task Action Plan (Enclosure 2) includes 'the j

implementation schedule for all recommendations except Recommendation 1-2b on environmental. qualification testing of electrical equipment ~ (EQ). The.EQ Task i

Action Plan-(Enclosure 3) addresses this recommendation.

j i

'These action plans will be revised, as necessary, to. incorporate additional issues the staff finds in its evaluation and review.

Status. reports will be i

forwarded to you quarterly.

j Sincerely, M

Y~
