Dear Mr. Schnell:

SUBJECT:

ROUTINE RADIATION PROTECTION INSPECTION AT CALLAWAY NUCLEAR POWER

STATION

This refers to the routine safety inspection conducted by Mr. D. W. Nelson of

this office on June 7-8 and 10-11, 1993. This inspection included a review of

activities authorized for your Callaway Nuclear Power Station. At the

conclusion of the inspection, tne findings were discussed with those members

of your staff identified in the enclosed report.

t

Areas examined during this inspection are identified in the report. Within

these areas, the inspection consisted of selective examinations of procedures

and representative records, interviews with personnel, and observations of

activities in progress.

Based on the results of this inspection, certain of your activities appeared

to be in violation of NRC requirements, as specified in the enclosed Notice of

Violation. The violation is of concern because an employee willfully violated

two of your station procedures.

Even though the violation had only minor

i

safety significance and the corrective actions taken appeared to be have been

adequate, the willfulness of the violations precludes us from exercising

enforcement discretion.

Although 10 CFR 2.201 requires you to submit to this office, within 20 days of

your receipt of this Notice, a written statement of explanation, we note that

this violation had been corrected and those actions were reviewed during this

inspection. Therefore, no response with respect to this matter is required

,

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the Commission's regulations, a copy of

,

this letter and the enclosed inspection report will be placed in the NRC

Public Document Room.
