June 28, 1993 Docket Nos. 50-259, 50-260 and 50-296 Dr. Mark 0. Medford, Vice President Technical Support Tennessee Valley Authority 3B Lookout Place 1101 Market Street Chattanooga, Tennessee 37402-2801
Dear Dr. Medford:
SUBJECT:
RESPONSE TO NRC BULLETIN 93-02, " DEBRIS PLUGGING 0F EMERGENCY CORE COOLING SUCTION STRAINERS" - BROWNS FERRY NUCLEAR PLANT (TAC NOS. M86535, M86536, AND M86537)
By letter dated May 23, 1993, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) responded to NRC Bulletin 93-02 for the Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant (BFN).
This Bulletin was issued on May 11, 1993, to all nuclear power reactor licensees.
It requested licensees to identify fibrous material in the primary containment, take any necessary compensatory measures, and remove any such material. TVA's response confirmed that there are no fibrous materials, such as described in Bulletin 93-02, contained in the BFN, Unit 2 drywell (i.e., primary containment). With regard to BFN, Units 1 and 3, these units will be examined for fibrous materials prior to startup from their current extended outages.
i Before each respective startup, TVA will submit a report confirming that Units 1 and 3 have been inspected and any applicable fibrous material removed.
The staff reviewed TVA's response to Bulletin 93-02, and considers it acceptable. However, TVA is requested to retain any records regarding their actions in response to this Bulletin, as subsequent inspection activities may be conducted to verify these actions.
