Answers to Decommissioning Questions

{

i 1.

What is the estimated volume of waste from decommissioning a j

typical nuclear power plant?

r Answer: About 20,000 m of solid radioactive waste is expected to I

3 be generated from prompt dismantlement of a typical

)

commercial nuclear power plant. This estimate may vary by 100% or more. It also assumes that the spent fuel is transferred to the Department of Energy in advance of dismantlement.

2.

What is the composition of decommissioning wastes at nuclear I

power plants?

l Answer: The radioactive wastes will be composed _of e Contaminated concrete o Contaminated steel (e.g., reinforcing steel, piping, ventilation systems, tanks, reactor pressure vessel, heat exchangers) e Contaminated equipment e Decontamination solutions

  • Protective clothing and contamination control materials l

3.

What are the disposal options for decommissioning wastes?

Answer:

  • Offsite disposal at a licensed disposal facility o Onsite disposal with institutional controls (would require an exemption from NRC's current decommissioning regulations)
