ENCLOSURE

, SEQUOYAH NUCLEAR PLANT UNIT 1 SPECIAL REPORT 93-06 ,

FIRE PUMPS OUT OF SERVICE Descriplion of Condition l On May 11,1993, at 0802 Eastern daylight time (EDT), Limiting Condition i for Operation (LCO) 3.7.11.1 was entered because only one of four i high-pressure fire pumps (HPFPs) was operable. One pump was inoperable because of an inoperable motor, and two other pumps were administrative 1y declared inoperable because their emergency power supply was unavailable as a result of scheduled maintenance. The normal power supply to these I two pumps was always available. Action Statement LCO 3.7.11.1.a requires  !

the inoperable equipment to be restored to service within seven days. l The extent of the maintenance prevented any of the three inoperable fire  !

pumps from being returned to operable status as defined by the technical i specifications within the seven-day timeframe.

Carrectiva_Antinn l With less than the minimum HPFP pumps operable as defined in the TSs, Operations personnel appropriately entered LCO 3.7.11.1. Fire Operations personnel were prepared to connect an auxiliary fire suppression pumper j to the fire protection system, taking suction from the intake in the l event of a fire. The normal power supply for the HPFP pumps was always available. Therefore, two additional pumps could have performed their intended f unction, if needed. The 2A-A diesel generator was returned to service at 2335 EDT on May 19, 1993, reestablishing the 2A-A HPFP pump emergency power supply. LCO 3.7.11.1 was exited on May 20, 1993, at 0601 EDT after the completion of the test verifying operability of the HPFP pump.
