INSPECTION OF THE 1993 EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS EXERCISE AT PERRY

This refers to the inspection conducted by Ms. H. Simons and others of this

-

office on June 1-4, 1993. The inspection included a review of activities

.

authorized at your Perry Nuclear Power Plant. At the conclusion of the

inspection, the findings were discussed with those members of your staff

identified in the enclosed inspection report.

Areas examined during the inspection are identified in the enclosed report.

Within these areas, the inspection consisted of a selective examination of

procedures and records, interviews with personnel, and observations of

activities in progress.

No violations of NRC requirements were identified during the course of this

,

inspection. However, one exercise weakness was identified during this

inspection which will require corrective action. This weakness is summarized

in the Appendix to this letter. As required by 10 CFR 50, Appendix E'(IV.F),

any weaknesses that are identified must be corrected.

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the Commission's regulations, a copy of

this letter and the enclosed inspection report will be placed in the NRC

Public Document Room.

Exercise Weakness

During the 1993 exercise, the licensee failed to verify a worker's medical

qualification prior to assigning him a respirator. This worker had not

received a medical qualification within the last 12 months as required .by

10 CFR 20.103(c)(2). This weakness is discussed in Section 4.c of Inspection

Report No. 50-440/93013(DRSS).
