SURFACE AND GROUND WATER SAMPLING FR0 GRAMS (TAC NO. L30500)
This refers to your application dated December 21, 1992, requesting an an.endment to License SNM-1227 to revise the surface forage sampling schedule and to use five new wells to monitor ground water near the lagoons. Our review has identified that the following additional information is needed before final action can be taken on your request.
The application should include changes to Part II - Safety Demonstration -
i that demonstrate that the ground water monitoring wells are correctly designed j
and appropriately placed to intercept any leaks from the lagoons. The Safety 4
Demonstration should include-1 (1)
The depth and direction of flow of ground water in the surface i
aquifer beneath the lagoons, 4
(2)
The depth and location of the base of the surface aquifer (i.e.,
low-permeable layer that defines the base of the surface zone),
(3)
The design of the ground water monitoring wells, their depths, diameters, screened intervals, materials of construction (including sand / gravel pack), and surface seals, (4)
How the wells were installed and developed, (5)
Well purging procedures and sampling methods, as well as analytical and laboratory quality assurance procedures.
The additional information should be provided in the form of a revised application, within 30 days of the date of this letter.
