performance via the Nuclear Division Imprcvement Plan (NDIP) to be

Furthermore we encourage you to provide far prompt feedback on
tle results of the actions, implemented, such that corrections in your plan'can
be promptly made.
Areas that we consider are-in need of continuing-management
attention are as follows:

The area of maintenance has been considered weak, and although some-signs
of improving performance have recently been evident, the-difficulty with
the implementation of the Work Control Center prior to the 1990 refueling
l-
outage has emphasized the need to continue to focus on this area.
l

Overall, the performance of technical work has improved during the past
-

year, however specific areas remain in need of improvement.
You are
-
encouraged to-fully implement the actions outlined in your Engineering
[
Excellence Program.
'
Quality Assurance (QA) has also shown improvement, however management
(
should continue to demand that QA perform critical, in-depth audits, and
that programs such as the recently implemented Corrective Action Program
be closely monitored by QA.
With regard to the NDIP, the success of the
NDIP may depend in large measure on QA's ability to monitor the
i-
effectiveness of the implementation of the plan.
In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790(a), a copy of this letter and the enclosures
