of our Region 1 office during the perioo April 2 through 12, 1990, of activities

authorized by WRC t)perating License NPF-42 Wolf Creek Generating Station, and

to the discussion of our findings with Mr. J. A. Bailey and other members of

your staff at the conclusion of the inspection,

Areas examined during the inspection included independent rieasurerm.nts using

the trobile nondestWctive examination laboratory of inservice inspection,

erosion / corrosion detection, and pitu modification activities. Within these

areas, the inspection consisted of selective examinations, review of procedures

and representative records, interviews with personnel, and observations by the

NRC inspectors. The inspection findings are documented in the enclosed inspection

report.

Within the scope of the inspection, no violations or deviations were identified.

Two unresolved items are identified in paragraphs 2.5 and 3.0 of the enclosed

inspection report.

The inspection also identified two concerns which involved the effectiveness

oferosion/corrosiondetectionequipment(paragraph 2.6)andtheeffectiveness

of radiation surveys performed on equipment being removed from radiologically

controlledareas(paragraph 4.0). You are requested to review and evaluate the

effectiveness of the techniques being used to detect erosion / corrosion degradation

as discussed in paragraph 2.6 and provide a written response, within 60 days of

the date of this letter. The radiation survey concern discussed in paragraph 4.0

was referred to our radiation specialists and addressed in paragraph 8 of NRC

Inspection Report 50-482/90-17.
