Duke Power Company NPDES Monitoring Report for McGuire Nuclear Station - NC0024392 File: MC-702.25

Dear Sir:

In accordance with Part II, C(2) of the above referenced NPDES permit, duplicate copies of the monthly monitoring report for April, 1990 are enclosed.

On April 11, 1990, the sanitary wastewater treatment system (Outfall 003) was experiencing a period of operational upset. This was evidenced by the high levels of focal coliform that were recorded and reported.

Additionally, the analytical results of a BOD, collected from outfall 003 on this day, showed complete oxygen depletion in the sample. The dilutions used in preparing the samples for analyses were insufficient to obtain an accurate BOD result. Since a BOD result could not be determined with any confidence, none was reported for this day.

By the end of the month, operation of the treatment system had recovered.

This system is an indirect discharge, therefore, there was no impact to receiving waters during the excursion. The treatment system is presently under evaluation to determine if any changes could be made to improve it's overall operation.
