Correspondence Control Desk P. O. Box No. 195 Wayne, Pennsylvania 19087-0195

Dear Mr. Hunger:

SUBJECT:

NRC GENERIC LETTER 89-08: ER0EION/ CORROSION - INDUCED PIPE WALL THINh!NG, LIMERICK GENER.ATING STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2 (MPA B-108 TAC NOS. 73501,75302)

Generic Letter 89-08: " Erosion / Corrosion - Induced Pipe Wall Thinning" ested May 2, 1989 a quired all licensees and applicants to provide assurances, that they have implemented or will implement a program which ensures that erosion /

corrosion induced pipe wall thinning will not lead to unacceptable degradation of single phase or two-phase high-eneroy carbon steel systems. You responded by letter dated July 21, 1989 for Limerick, Units 1 and 2 QNUDOCS Accession-No.8907280105).

Your response stated that the Philadelphia Electric Company is implementing long-term erosion / corrosion monitoring programs at the Limerick Generating Station. These programs provide assurance that administrative controls are in place to assure that the NUMARC program is implemented and that the structural integrity of high energy piping systems is maintained in accordance with the intent of NUREG-1344, " Erosion / Corrosion-Induced Pipe Wall Thinning in U.S.

Nuclear Power Plants.*

i Specifically, your response stated that you have an established long-term erosion / corrosion monitoring program for Limerick Generating Station (LGS),

Units 1 and 2.

The program assures that the structural integrity of high-energy single-phase and two-phase carbon steel systems is maintained. The Limarick Generating Station Erosion / Corrosion Program is described in Specification P-508, Nuclear Engineering Department Specification for Limerick Generating Station Units 1 and 2 - Program for Monitoring Pipe for Wall Thinning due to Erosion / Corrosion." This specification is in place and being implemented.

You also reported that an acceptable ultrasonic detection procedure is being used to inspect for erosion / corrosion in piping systems.

CNPE-SP-3,"NDE Services Special Procedure for the Ultrasonic Detection of Erosion / Corrosion inPipingSystems.") You also reported that baseline inspections of pipe and fittings in single-phase flow locations have been performed at Units 1 and 2 and that baseline inspections (and several follow-up inspections) of pipe and l

fittings in many two-phase flow locations have been performed at Units 1 and 2.
