Dear Mr. Caso:
The NRC has recently received a copy of a complaint filed by Duke Power Company
-in the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina, concerning steam generators supplied by Westinghouse for use in the McGuire and Catawba nuclear power plants. The complaint alleges,-in part, that the steam generators

- supplied by Westinghouse were defective in design, workmanship, and materials.
NRC has also received copies of similar complaints recently filed by South l
+ Carolina Electric and Gas Company and Carolina. Power and Light Company also l
alleging defective design, workmanship and materials by Westinghouse in the-supply of steam generators.
In addition, NRC has been informed that complaints
-have also been filed by Southern California Edison Company, Florida Power and Light Company, and Consolidated Edison Company concerning steam generators j
supplied by' Westinghouse.
i At this time, the NRC'has no position on the merits of the licensees' complaints.
However, we wish to renind you of Westinghouse's responsibilities under 10 CFR Part 21 for the review and evaluation or notification to customers of deviations
{
in safety-related-equipment, materials, and services and the notification to NRC of defects in such products which may be identified by-Westinghouse at any time, including during the review and discovery process resulting from these and any l
other; complaints.
