Nine Mile Point Unit 1 Docket No. 50-220 DPR-63 Gentlemen:
As requested by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Staff in a March 15, 1990 telephone call, the following information is provided regarding the containment vent and purge valves at Nine Mile Point Unit 1:
1)
The modification to automatically close the containment vent and purge-valves on high radiation monitored at the stack was implemented during the 1986 refueling outage at Nine Mile Point Unit 1.
Prior to startup from the current outage, modifications will be completed to achieve a 15 second closure time for the air-operated containment vent and purge valves and a 30 second closure time for the motor-operated vent and purge valves.

Technical Specification changes to reflect these modifications will be submitted shortly after the restart of Nine Mile Point Unit 1.-

The surveillance of the containment vent and purge valve closure times is performed on a quarterly basis under the Inservice Testing Program in accordance with Procedure N1-ST-05.
The surveillance of the closure of the containment vent and purge valves on high radiation is performed on a quarterly basis in accordance with Procedure N1-RSP-130 However, during operation these valves are normally closed and N1-RSP-130 consists of visually observing the valve relays only.
