50320-820322 March 22, 1982 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-TMI-82-05 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.

The information is as initially received without verifi-cation or evaluation and is basically all that is known by NRC staff on this date.

Subject:

REACTOR COOLANT SYSTEM LEAK RATE An Unusual Event was declared at the Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, Unit 2, at 10:25 AM, today, because of an apparent leak in the reactor coolant system (RCS).

The plant was put on emergency status when instruments indicated that the coolant system was leaking at a rate faster than one-gallon per minute.

The licensee was in the process of removing make up filter 4A.

The removal of the filter head resulted in a leakage of water from the cover of the housing.

Approximately 150 gallons of water leaked from the filter housing and was collected in 55 gallon drums.

No one was contaminated, and area and effluent monitors did not indicate any airborne increase.

All activity was contained in the Unit 2 Auxiliary Building.

At 11 :15 AM the leak rate wat J.28 gpm.

Media interest occurred because of public sensitivity to TMI related events and the licensee's notification to local officials.

The licensee has issued a press release and the NRC is presently responding to inquiries.

The Commonwealth of Pennsy'.vania was info rmed.

This preliminary notification is issued to provide current information on this event and the NRC plans to continue monitoring events as they occur.

The NRC TMI Program Office received notification of this occurrence by the public address system at 10:25 AM, and this informatioyuas current as of 11:30 AM.

A 10 CFR 50.7 report was made at 10:35 AM, to N.
