3 N/A IA INSTRU While performing maintenance on the manual scram relay of SRM channel "D",
the close proximity of Lrth RPS power supplies, due to circuit redundancy, permitted a short between relay contacts that blev both manual scram circuit fuses and tripped the plant. Management elected to perform other maintenance at this time that extended the duration'of the outage.

SUMMARY
OF OPERATING EXPERIENCES Highlights Vermont Yankee operated at 91.2% of rated thermal power for the month.
Gross electrical generation was 359,053 MWH, or 89.4% of design electrical capacity.
Operating Summary The followinF 's a chronological description of plant operations including other pertinent items of interest for the month:
5/1/81 At the beginning of the reporting period the plant was operating at 99.8% of rated thermal power.
5/11/81 At 1002 hrs, the reactor scrammed because of a blown fuse in the Reactor Protection System.
5/12/81 At 1740 hrs. a reactor startup was initicted, the reactor was critical at 1855 hrs.
5/13/81 At 0335 hrs. the turbine was phased onto the grid.
5/14/81 At 1400 hrs. the plant went on closed cycle cooling.
5/17/81 At 0100 hrs. power was reduced for turbine surveillcnce.
5/17/81 At 0300 hrs, a return to full power was initiated.
5/30/81 At 1035 hrs. a power reduction was initiated to investigate high reactor vessel conductivity.
Turbine and control rod surveillance were done at this time.
5/31/81 At 0245 hrs. a return to full power was initiated.
5/31/81 At the end of the reporting period the reactor was operating at 99.8% of rated thermal power.
