EXECUTIVE SUtetARY This progress report presents data for field and laboratory work during the period November 21, 1981 to February 20, 1982.

During that time, three field trips were made to retrieve and replace long- and short-term panels at each of 20 stations, and to measure temperature, salinity, pH and dissolved oxygen. All work was accomplished. The missing rack at Station 13 was found in good condition and rehung in December, 1981. A new site less than one mile north of Berkeley Yacht Basin, Seaside was established on the municipal dock at Seaside Heights in December,1981 as a replacement for Station 16.

I Laboratory analysis of the panels showed Tercio bartschi present at Oyster Creek Stations 5 and 7 in December, i ' and January and February,1982. Teredo barcachi were identf~- ' from Station 6 in December,1981 and January,1982. One questionable specimen of Terado bartschi was found in the long-term panel examined in February,1982 from Station 8 in Oyster Creek. This specimen will be sent out for verification during the next quarter.

Teredo r.avaZia continues to be most cormion at Station 1, near Barnecat Inlet. Bankia gouldi occurred in low numbers at several stations along the western shore of Barnegat Bay.

Limnovia spp. continued to be present at Stations 1 through 4A with a very light attack at Stations 1 through 4. Station 4A is showing a seasonal decline from the very heavy Limnoria attack in the exposure panels examined during the 26th quarter.

flost gonads examined during November and December were in the partially spawned to spent phase. By January, however, there was increased gonadal activity, with a large percentage of specimens having gonads in the early active phase. This is consistent with the activity cycles of temperate bivalves.

A large number of Teredo bartschi were already dead when I fixed for histological examination as evidenced by the necrotic condition of the tissues. It is possible that they succumbed to i

" winter kill", a stress placed upon them by prolonged cold temperature.

This is also a comrr.on phenomenon in temperate regions.

I I i STUDY OF WOODBORER POPULATIONS IN RELATION TO THE OYSTER CREEK GENERATING STATION 3 by l N. Maciolek-Blake, C.I. Belmore, and R.E. Hillman I INTRODUCTION Battelle's New England Marine Research Laboratory is conducting an investigation to determine whether the generating station is affecting the resident marine borer population in Oyster Creek to the extent that that population is contributing significantly to marine borer-caused damage in Barnegat Bay.

A description of the program and procedures used may be found in the Fifth Annual Report titled " Study of Woodborer Populations in Relation to the Oyster Creek Generating Station", Report 15040, dated february 27, 1981.

I This report presents data for the twenty-seventh quarterly period from November 21, 1981 to February 20, 1982.

PROCEDURES AND INTERIM DATA Exposure Panels I The long-term and short-term exposure panels were retrieved and replaced with new untreated pre-soaked (for two weeks) panels at the I 20 exposure sites in Barnegat Bay and adjacent waters (Figure 1) during the periods December 8-9, 1981, January 5-6, and February 2, 1982. Long-term and short-term panels at all stations were retrieved and replaced with two exceptions.

At Station 13, the entire rack of panels was missing in October,1981, and a new rack was installed in November,1981. At the time of the December,1981 field trip, the lost rack was recovered.

Since it appeared to have been continuously submerged and all borers and fouling organisms apparently were alive, it was rehung in its original I

3 location. One month (short-term) panels were retrieved and replaced on the new rack (installed in November,1981) while long-term (6-month) panels were retrieved from the old rack. As of February 20, 1982 one I long-term panel remains on the old rack and will be removed in March,

)

1982. Subsequently, all panels will be removed and replaced on one rack only.

As stated in the last quarterly report, the owner of the Berkeley Yacht Basin (Station 16) requested that we remove the rack l from his location in November,1981. Another location was secured a short distance to the north of the Berkeley Yacht Basin, and a new rack was installed at the Municipal Dock in Seaside Heights December I

8, 1981. This location is referred to as Station 16A.

Table 1 describes the geographical locations of the exposure sites. The data for the laboratory examination of the panels may be found in Tables 2 through 5.

Water Quality Salinity, water temperature, dissolved oxygen, and pH were determined with a Hydrolab (Model II B), calibrated prior to eacn day's use. The results for December,1981, January and February,1982 may I be found in Tables 6 through 8.

Field Sampling Team In January and February,1982, two of GPU's personnel accom-panied our field team during the retrieval and replacement of exposure panels in order to become familiar with locations and procedures. GPU personnel will be conducting the field work portion of this program starting March, 1982.
