Subject:

Request for Additional Information Concerning La Salle's Containment Purge / Vent Operation e

We reviewed your submittal dated November 4,1981 for the La Salle County Station, Units 1 and 2 concerning the operability of con-tainment purge and vent valves. As part of the review, we con-sidered your response as it applies to the NRC staff's, " Guidelines for Demonstration of Operability of Purge and Vent Valves."

As a result, we find that before we can complete our review additional infomation is necessary. The specific infomation is listed in the Enclosure.

If there are any questions concerning the enclosed additional informa-tion requested, please contact A. Bournia (301) 492-8196, the Licensing Project Manager.

Sincerely, A. Schwencer, Chief Licensing Branch No. 2 Division of Licensing

Fisher recommends replacement of the EPT seats every 4 years.

( Attachment 9, Type 9200 Instruction Manual for maintenance recom-mendations).

Commonwealth Edison should confirm their intention to follow this schedule or propose an alternate replacement program.

3.

The Commonwealth Edison submittai contained information or, torcues determined from tes.ts of straight-line, uniform apprcach flow.

In the response prepared by Fisher for LaSaile, Fisher stated the opinion that non-uniform flow profile woulc not produce additional tcroue on the valve if the valve shaft is in ' plane with the plane of an upstream elbow or bend. The NRC staff agrees that the resulting torcues for this configuration will crobably be less severe than for e skaf cut-cf-:ian:, tu:
