LaSalle County Station Units 1 and 2 Division 3 HPCS Switchgear 10 CFR 50.55(e) Final Report #82-02 NRC Docket Nos. 50-373 and 50-374

Dear Mr. Keppler:

The Ccmmonwealth Edison Company notified ycur o f fice on Janua ry 27, 1982, o f a possible reportable deficient y on the switchgear equipment that is used on the Hign Pressure Core Spray System a t LaSalle County Station. That notification was made in accordance with 10 CFR 50.55(e).

Description o f Deficiency LaSalle County Station has General Electric's Vertical Lif t Metal-Clad Switchgear Equipment, Model 4.16-350 that is used on the High Pressure Core Spray System. This switchgear is rated at 78,000 amps momentary short circuit current. General Electric has indicated that recent tests have shown that bt.3 support dielectric damage can occur with momentary currents above 66,000 amps.

Corrective Action General Electric has modification kits available for upgrading the existing equipment to a rating o f 80,000 amp momentary short circuit current. The kit consists o f:

1. Additional supports to some main bus arrangements.
2. Stif fer supports at rear end o f current transfor-mer runback supports.
3. Additional supports at front end a f C.T. runback bars.

For Unit 1, all of the material included in the modification kits has been received at LaSalle County Station. General Electric will De handling the installation o f the modification via on FDDR #HAl-1523. The work is scheduled to begin the week o f 3-8-82. Total time for completion should not De more tnan 1 week. The modification will not change any o f the original documentation approved for this equipment. Fo r Unit 2, the modification will be completed prior to Unit 2 Fuel Load.
