KMLNRC 82-166 Re:

NRC Docket No. STN 50-482 Subj: Potential 10CFR50.55(c) Report - Tarminals in Main Control Panels

Dear Mr. Madsen:

1 On January 26, 1982, Kansas Gas and Electric Corpany made a telephone report to Mr. W.A. Crossman (NRC) regarding suspect crimped terminals in the COMSIP Main Control Panels. This letter provides an update on the status of testing and evaluations of the terminal crimps.

Electrical and mechanical tests have been completed to determine the voltage drop across the terminals and the tensile force the terminals can withstand. These test results have been forwarded to the Architect /

Engineer for evaluation.

Preliminary evaluation of the test results indicates that the suspect terminal crimps may not be a significant safety problem. However, a more indepth study of the test results and installed terminals is being con-ducted to determine the safety implications. This problem will be handled as a potential 10CFn50.55(e) until a final determination is made on the safety implications of the suspect terminal crimps. Results of the final evaluation or an interim report will be sent to the NRC on or before April 9,1982.

In the interim, please direct any questions on this matter to me or to Mr. Gene Rathbun of my staff.

Yours very truly,

$ll0 GLK:bb
