Dear Mr. Jones:

1 This letter is in regard to our Generic letter 81-14 entitled " Seismic Qualification of Auxiliary Feodwater Systems" which was forwarded to you on February 10, 1981. OPPD responded to this letter on July 14,1981, and provided supplemental information in letters dated September 14,1981 and January 8, 1982. We have written a Safety Evaluation Report based on your submittals (enclosed).

It concludes that the Safe Shutdown Earthquake (SSE) seismic qualification of the appropriate portions of the Fort Calhoun Unit 1 auxiliary feedwater system is consistent with that of other safety grade systems at the facility provided that four corrective actions are taken.

The four corrective actions are (a) add an additional support bo the electrical supply conduit which provides service to the motor of AFW Pump FU-6, (b) replace existing support rods for valve operators on small bore piping with a r: ore stable support, (c) add pipe restraints on amall bore piping (cold system), and (d) add pipe restraints on small bore piping (hot system) if a detailed pipe stress analysis concludes that such additional supports will not have a detrimental thercal impact on the AFU system.

Subsequent to the oormletion of our SER, E. G. Tourigny of my staff contacted T. Patterspn and R. Short of your staff to ascertain the status of the above four corrective actions.

It is our understanding that corrective actions a-c are completed.

It is also our understanding that a detailed pipe stress analysis as discussed in item (d)was performed and additional pipe restraints s

on small bore piping (hot system) were added per the conclusions of the

. Based on the above, we conclude that there is reasonable assurance that the auxiliary feedwater system will function follwing the occurrence of earthquakesuup to and including the SSE for the plant, fio further actions are required on the part of Omaha Public Power District for the Fort Calhoun Station, Unit 1, and this letter corpletes this matter.

Sincerely,

! "rd by.

The four corrective actions are (a) add an additional support to the electrical supply conduit which provides service to the motor of AFW Pump FW-6, (b) replace existing support rods for valve operators on small bore piping with a more stable support, (c) add pipe restraints on small bore piping (cold system), and (d) add pipe restraints on small bore piping (hot system) if a detailed pipe stress analysis concludes that such additional supports will not have a detrimental thermal impact on the AFW system.

Subsequent to the completion of our SER, E. G. Tourigny of my staff contacted T. Patterson and R. Short of your staff to ascertain the status of the above four corrective actions.
