Subject:

Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station A

Docket No. 50-219 NUREG 0737 item Il.K.3.25

Reference:

(a) BWR Owners Group NUREG 0737 Implementation: Analyses and Positions Submitted to the USNRC (May 22, 1981)

Supplemented September, 1981 The purpose of this let'or is to transmit to you our position on NUREG ltem i I.K.3.25 "Et f ect of Loss of AC Power on Pump Seal s."

The results of the tests conducted by the BWR Owners Group on the Byron Jackson pumps, (reference a), concluded that pumps seal leakage is acceptably low foilowing a loss of seal cooling water for as long as two hours.

Since the Oyster Creek facility utilizes the same type of pumps as reviewed by the BWR Owners group, we have concluded that the seal design at Oyster Creek is acceptable relative to the requirements of this NUREG item and that no modifications are necessary, if you should have any further questions, please contact Mr. James Knubel, Manager, BWR Licensing at 201-299-2264.

Very truly yours, A

P. B. Fledler Vice President A.
